The Portland Timbers and Thorns are contracted by Oregon Youth Soccer to administer their ODP program and make technical decisions. It is a significant stage of both the Portland Timbers and Thorns development pyramid, and the training groups are also referred to as; state pools. The Olympic Development Program (ODP) is a national program run under the auspices of US Youth Soccer. Its mission is to identify players of the highest caliber on a continuing and consistent basis, which in turn aids the development of elite youth soccer players in representing their state, region, and country in soccer competitions.

OYSA-Timbers/Thorns ODP Development Academy Philosophy

These collaborative programs aim to identify and develop the top players in Oregon and SW Washington (both boys and girls) to prepare them as student/athletes for exposure to regional and national ODP programs, as well as collegiate and potentially professional soccer settings.  It is clear that both OYSA and the Portland Timbers and Thorns share the same objectives for Elite Player development in our territory and we are working together to achieve this mission.

ODP Objectives

The principal Portland Timbers/PortlandThorns FC/OYSA ODP mission is to identify, evaluate, and provide more consistent training opportunities for the elite youth soccer players in Oregon.  As part of the national effort, the Portland Timbers/Portland Thorns FC/OYSA ODP program is dedicated to developing the highest level of youth soccer in the state and Portland Timbers homegrown territory.  This objective will be achieved in an atmosphere of integrity, fairness, and impartiality.  The player's talent with a ball, their physical and cognitive skills, together with their attitude will be the criteria for entry into the program.  In developing this collaborative program, both entities will ensure that the procedures will not conflict with any current United States Youth Soccer (USYS),United States Soccer Federation (USSF) policies or any NCAA eligibility rules for college entry.

There are inherent secondary objectives too:

  • To evaluate and select players regionally in each ODP age group that will train and then be evaluated to select a state pool of players from which state team players are then identified and state Timbers-Thorns-ODP teams formed.
  • To advance the soccer skills and knowledge of players and coaches in each Timbers-Thorns-ODP age group, to send back to their club teams to share and develop.
  • To provide appropriate competition for state Timbers-Thorns-ODP teams in each age group.

While individual leagues or districts may have additional objectives for their local programs, those objectives will not adversely affect the success of the Timbers and Thorns ODP Program. In fact, they will complement one another.

ODP participation does not mean that the players cannot participate on their club team.  On the contrary, Timbers-Thorns-ODP participation, whether at the pool, state, regional, or national level, is concurrent with club team participation.  A mutually agreed upon training calendar will be implemented.  Participation at this elite level provides many advantages for the clubs too, such as exposure.  The advantages of player development outweigh any conflicts this might pose and indeed criteria will be produced to protect the club from poaching or recruiting within the soccer year.

Timbers/Thorns Regional Training Center (RTC)

What is the Regional Training Center Program (RTC)?

The Regional Training Center program, also known as RTC, is a player s first step in the Timbers and Thorns Developmental Pyramid with opportunities to reach the Oregon Olympic Development Program (ODP) and beyond. Elite players from all over the state, born in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011/12 will try out for the RTC program in late-August and will train with high-level coaches we’ve put in place in each RTC location.

The sole purpose of the RTC program is to regionalize competitive pools all over the state in order to offer more players the opportunity for additional training, while also allowing the Oregon ODP staff to identify players for the ODP program. The RTC program has been a huge success with players from all over the state making their way to the Oregon ODP program while also helping to produce players like Timbers first-team player, Marco Farfan and a host of other players who have gone through the Timbers and Thorns Academy program and have made their way to collegiate soccer.

For a very detailed guide to the RTC program and the Developmental Pyramid, we would highly recommend you read the RTC Information Documents located on the Timbers RTC page at www.timbers.com or by clicking on either the Boys or Girls documents below.

Girls RTC Information Document

Where is each RTC located?

The RTC program will have training centers in the following locations: Portland West (Beaverton), Portland East (Gresham/Clackamas), Portland North/Vancouver (Delta Park/Luke Jensen), Portland South (Tigard), Salem, Bend, Eugene/Corvallis, Medford/Grants Pass and the Gorge (Hood River).

How to Register for Tryouts

Tryouts will begin for all groups around the state no sooner than August 20th. Each location will offer 3-4 tryout dates over a two-week period in case families have conflicts and can’t make tryouts during a particular week. Tryout Information will be posted under the RTC section on the Timbers website once we confirm dates and times at each location! To register for tryouts, type in registration.timbers.com or click here.

Covid-19 Protocols for Tryouts

The safety of players is the number one priority, always, and we will have a very structured plan in place for tryouts in regards to the Covid-19 situation. This will be very clear for all staff and families with safety being the top priority as tryouts approach. There is a chance that we are not in a good place by late August to hold tryouts in some areas, but we are moving forward as if tryouts are happening and our protocols for this will be communicated to all, well-before tryouts begin.

RTC Directors and Staff

RTC Directors who have been confirmed have bios included in the RTC Information Guides for both the boys and girls. We are close to finalizing all staff for each location as well and each staff will be posted under the RTC coaches section on the website very soon.

Tryout Schedules and Locations and Dates

Tryout schedules for each part of the state have been set.

RTC (U10-U14) Boys & Girls:
Date: October 2nd, 2020
Location: Fir Grove Park, Roseburg
Time: 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm

DA Conflicts no longer in place

With the USDA and Club DA programs being shut down by US Soccer at U12-14, there are no longer any conflicts for players to try out for the Timbers and Thorns RTC program. A number of families have already inquired about this and are excited they get to return to the RTC program.

Again, we would highly recommend you read through the RTC Information Document for a detailed look into the program and don’t hesitate to email if you have any questions.
